This section of our website is intended to be a helpful guide for people visiting it, who require any hints and tips to make their move a much easier and pleasant experience.

1.Three to four weeks before you move
Start
packing non-essential items, and clearly label every box with room and contents.
Start to run down the contents of your freezer.
You may wish to arrange for your new home to be professionally cleaned once
the previous tenant or owner has moved out.
2.Two weeks before you move
Make a
plan of where your furniture will go in your new home and return any library
books.
Reconfirm the moving date with the removal or van company.
Continue packing.
3.One week before you move
Arrange
with your solicitor how, where and when the keys are to be collected and your
old keys dropped off.
Cancel any newspaper or milk deliveries and the window cleaner.
Make a map of the location of your new home for the removal company.
Notify your neighbours that you'll be moving.
Book a parking space for the moving van, if necessary, at your current and
new home.
Continue packing.
4.They day before you move
Read all
meters.
Defrost your fridge and freezer
Make up your 'moving day kit'.
Clean your house.
Dismantle any large pieces of furniture and clearly label any nuts and bolts.
Keep personal items, jewellery and documents in a safe place.
Make sure all drawers and cupboards are empty.
Take down any curtains, blinds, mirrors you are taking with you.
5.Your moving day kit should contain-
A list
of important telephone numbers.
A flask of tea or coffee.
Snacks.
Food for any pets.
Torch.
Scissors and a Stanley knife.
Hammer and nails.
Screwdrivers.
Light bulbs.
Sellotape.
First aid kit.
Cleaning materials.
Bathroom tissue.
Kitchen roll.
Dustbin liners.
6.On your moving day
Collect
your keys.
Make sure the removal company knows where it's going and give the removers
a contact telephone number.
Have someone waiting at your new house to give directions to the removers,
make sure your old house is completely empty before the removal van leaves.
Securely lock windows and doors in your old house and deliver the keys as
agreed.
7.Once you're moved in
Read the
meters in your new home.
Check that your phone, gas and electricity works.
Keep pets out of the way until everything's in order.
Sort out the bedrooms.
Put up any blinds or curtains - it makes the house look occupied, and gives
you some privacy.
Put a nameplate on your front door - essential if you live in a flat with
a security entry system.
Find out where the mains water stopcock is.
Find a telephone number for a local emergency plumber.
Check that all of the radiators work and there are no leaks.
Set the controls for the central heating system.
Test the alarm to make sure all of the detectors work.
Test smoke alarms. (there's usually a test button on them)
Make sure everyone knows how to get out of the house in the event of an emergency.
Check that all the light switches and power points work.
Find the number for a local taxi firm.
Get bus and train timetables from the local travel centre or transport terminus.
Make sure you've told everyone about your new address and telephone number.
Introduce yourself to your neighbours.
